Why It Matters

Knowing Your Number Is the First Step

You can’t manage what you haven’t measured. A quick estimate gives you a starting point, whether you’re exploring Climate Active certification, preparing for AASB S2 disclosure, or simply want to understand where your emissions come from.

This calculator covers four common emission sources for a typical Australian business: natural gas or CNG used for heating or equipment, petrol and diesel used in vehicles, purchased electricity, and waste sent to landfill through a third-party contractor. Within each of Scope 1, 2 and 3, only these specific sources are counted. None of Scope 1, 2 or 3 is measured in full here.

Behind the scenes, every result draws on the same Australian National Greenhouse Accounts (NGA) emission factors used in a formal GHG inventory. The scope of what’s counted is deliberately narrow, but the numbers themselves are calculated properly, not guessed or rounded for convenience.

What’s Included

Four Emission Sources, Calculated Properly

  • Scope 1 — Natural gas / CNG: stationary combustion from heating or industrial equipment.
  • Scope 1 — Vehicle fuel: petrol and diesel used in cars and light commercial vehicles.
  • Scope 2 — Purchased electricity: matched to your state or grid.
  • Scope 3 (Category 3) — Upstream emissions related to electricity: the extraction, production and transmission losses embedded in the electricity you purchase, calculated automatically alongside your Scope 2 figure.
  • Scope 3 (Category 5) — Waste to landfill: waste processed by a third-party contractor, by stream, entered as either volume or weight.

Worth knowing: none of Scope 1, 2 or 3 is measured in full here. Scope 1 excludes other fuel types and fugitive or refrigerant emissions. Scope 2 excludes purchased steam, heat or cooling, and only reflects a location-based electricity factor, not a market-based one (i.e. it doesn’t account for any renewable energy contracts or GreenPower you may have purchased). Scope 3 covers only two categories (Category 3 and Category 5) out of the many that exist, common examples not included here are Category 1 (purchased goods and services), Category 6 (business travel) and Category 7 (employee commuting). This calculator is a starting, partial estimate, not a complete inventory of any scope.

Quick estimate

Carbon footprint calculator

Estimate emissions from fuel, electricity and waste in a few minutes.

Scope 1 (Partial) — Natural gas / Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)

Stationary combustion, e.g. heating or industrial equipment. Leave at 0 if not applicable.

Scope 1 (Partial) — Vehicle fuel

Cars and light commercial vehicles. Enter litres for whichever fuels you use — leave any at 0 if not applicable.

Scope 2 (Partial) — Purchased electricity

Also feeds your Scope 3 upstream electricity figure automatically. Add a row for each state or grid you draw electricity from.

Scope 3 (Partial) (Category 5) — Waste to landfill

Covers waste sent to landfill and processed by a third-party waste contractor, not disposal your own organisation operates or controls directly. Add a row for each waste stream you want to include.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about this calculator? Here’s what we’re asked most often.

This calculator estimates emissions from four sources: Scope 1 fuel combustion (natural gas, CNG, petrol and diesel), Scope 2 purchased electricity, and Scope 3 upstream fuel and electricity emissions plus waste sent to landfill. Scope 1, 2 and 3 are each only partially measured, none of the three scopes is covered in full.
No. This tool gives a simplified, indicative estimate only, not an audit-ready or third-party verifiable figure. A full GHG Emissions Inventory from Aqualis Carbon Advisory covers every relevant Scope 1, 2 and 3 category to a defensible standard suitable for reporting or certification.
Yes. Enter figures for both petrol and diesel at once, and add as many electricity or waste rows as you need, the calculator adds them all together automatically.
