About This Service

Carbon Offsets Guidance for Australian Organisations, Products and Precincts

Good carbon offsets guidance starts with an honest conversation about what offsetting can and cannot do. Offsets are not a substitute for genuine emissions reduction, but for the residual emissions your organisation cannot yet eliminate, high-integrity offsets are a legitimate and important part of a credible climate strategy. At Aqualis Carbon Advisory, we help you navigate this market with confidence, from understanding which offset standards are eligible for your certification pathway through to assessing the quality of specific projects.

Not all offsets are created equal. Additionality, permanence, verification rigour and co-benefits vary enormously between projects and standards, and poor-quality offsets expose your organisation to reputational and greenwashing risk. Our guidance is not limited to a fixed shortlist of standards. We assess any credible offset project on its merits, and we know the requirements of the Climate Active Carbon Neutral Standard in detail, including the five offset unit types currently eligible under it. We help you understand the differences between the standards available and identify projects that meet a genuinely high bar for integrity.

Our guidance applies at whatever scale you are offsetting at, whether that is residual emissions for an entire organisation, a specific product or service line, or a precinct or development seeking a shared carbon neutral or carbon positive outcome. Because we do not sell or broker offsets ourselves, our recommendations are based solely on what serves your climate ambitions and your organisation’s credibility, not on a commission.

Offset Standards We Guide You Through

Climate Active Eligible Carbon Offsets for Carbon Neutrality

Our guidance covers any good quality carbon offset project, not just a fixed shortlist. For clients pursuing Climate Active certification, five offset unit types are currently eligible under the Carbon Neutral Standard, and we help you understand each one in detail.

ACCU

Australian Carbon Credit Units

Issued by the Clean Energy Regulator in accordance with the framework established by the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) Act 2011, ACCUs are generated by registered Australian projects across land, waste, energy and industrial methods, with strong regulatory oversight.

CER

Certified Emissions Reductions

Issued under the rules of the Kyoto Protocol from Clean Development Mechanism projects. Long-term CERs and temporary CERs are excluded, as are CERs from nuclear projects, the destruction of trifluoromethane, the destruction of nitrous oxide from adipic acid plants, and large-scale hydroelectric projects inconsistent with the EU’s World Commission on Dams-based criteria.

RMU

Removal Units

Issued by a Kyoto Protocol country on the basis of land use, land-use change and forestry activities under Article 3.3 or Article 3.4 of the Kyoto Protocol, RMUs recognise verified carbon sequestration achieved through eligible land-based removal activities.

VER

Gold Standard Verified Emissions Reductions

Issued by the Gold Standard, VERs are drawn from an international portfolio of projects with a strong emphasis on measurable co-benefits, including biodiversity protection, community health and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, alongside rigorous emissions verification.

VCU

Verified Carbon Units

Issued by the Verified Carbon Standard, VCUs are drawn from the world’s most widely used voluntary carbon program, spanning nature-based, renewable energy and technology-based project types across a large global project pipeline.

Beyond this list: our guidance is not confined to Climate Active eligible units. If your organisation is offsetting outside a certification pathway, we assess any credible project against the same additionality, permanence and verification criteria. Eligibility under the Carbon Neutral Standard is also reviewed periodically by Climate Active, so we confirm current requirements at the time of your purchase, keeping your portfolio compliant.

Why It Matters

Why Offset Quality Matters for Carbon Neutrality and Carbon Positive Claims

Low-quality or poorly documented offsets are one of the fastest ways to undermine an otherwise credible climate strategy. Getting the selection process right protects your organisation’s reputation and your certification status.

Regulatory Drivers

  • Climate Active certification requires offsets to be sourced from eligible, currently approved standards and correctly retired in your name
  • Growing regulatory and media scrutiny of low-integrity offsets makes documented due diligence essential
  • Australian Consumer Law prohibits misleading claims about carbon neutral or offset-backed products and services
  • AASB S2 climate disclosures require entities to describe their planned use of carbon credits and the standards behind them

Commercial Drivers

  • High-integrity offsets protect brand reputation and reduce exposure to greenwashing allegations
  • A well-documented offset portfolio strengthens Climate Active applications and investor and customer confidence
  • Offsets with strong co-benefits can support broader ESG and community engagement objectives
  • Independent guidance avoids the conflict of interest inherent in buying advice from an offset seller
Our Methodology

Our Carbon Offset Guidance Process

We follow a structured, four-stage process to help you select and purchase carbon offsets with confidence, from understanding your residual emissions through to a documented, defensible portfolio.

01

Residual Emissions & Offset Needs Assessment

We confirm the volume of residual emissions you need to offset, informed by your GHG inventory and your net zero, carbon neutral or carbon positive target.

02

Offset Standard & Project Type Evaluation

We explain the eligible offset standards available to you and help you weigh up project types, such as nature-based, renewable energy or technology-based removals, against your priorities.

03

Due Diligence & Quality Screening

We assess candidate projects against additionality, permanence, verification and co-benefit criteria, flagging any integrity concerns before you commit to a purchase.

04

Purchase Guidance & Portfolio Documentation

We guide you through the purchase and retirement process with your chosen registry or supplier, and help you document your offset portfolio for disclosure and certification purposes.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about carbon offsets and how to buy them well? Here are the questions we hear most often from Australian organisations.

No. Aqualis Carbon Advisory does not sell, broker or hold any commercial stake in carbon offsets. We provide independent guidance to help you understand the market, evaluate offset quality and make an informed purchasing decision. This means our advice on which offsets suit your organisation is never influenced by a commission or a relationship with a particular supplier.
Five offset unit types are currently eligible under the Climate Active Carbon Neutral Standard: Australian Carbon Credit Units issued by the Clean Energy Regulator, Certified Emissions Reductions issued under the Kyoto Protocol’s Clean Development Mechanism (excluding long-term and temporary CERs, and CERs from nuclear projects, trifluoromethane destruction, nitrous oxide destruction from adipic acid plants, or non-compliant large hydro projects), Removal Units issued by a Kyoto Protocol country for eligible land-based removal activities, Verified Emissions Reductions issued by the Gold Standard, and Verified Carbon Units issued by the Verified Carbon Standard. Eligible standards and project types are reviewed periodically, so we confirm current requirements at the time of your purchase to keep your portfolio compliant.
No. Those five unit types cover what is currently eligible under the Climate Active Carbon Neutral Standard, but our guidance is not limited to a fixed shortlist. If you are offsetting outside a certification pathway, or considering a project type that sits outside these standards, we can still assess it against the same additionality, permanence, verification and co-benefit criteria we apply to every project. Our aim is to help you find genuinely good quality offsets, wherever they come from.
High-quality offsets demonstrate genuine additionality, meaning the emissions reduction would not have happened without the project, and permanence, meaning the reduction or removal is not easily reversed. They are independently verified against a recognised methodology, avoid double counting through proper registry retirement, and are transparently documented. We assess candidate projects against these criteria as part of our due diligence process, so you are not relying on marketing claims alone.
Offsets can compensate for emissions you have not yet been able to eliminate, but a credible carbon neutral or carbon positive claim also requires a genuine measurement and reduction effort behind it, not offsetting alone. We recommend building your offset strategy alongside a proper GHG inventory and net zero strategy, so offsets play their proper role as a bridge for residual emissions rather than a substitute for real reduction.
