About This Service

Corporate Greenhouse Gas Inventory and Reporting Services

Accurate carbon footprint measurement is the foundation of every credible net zero strategy. At Aqualis Carbon Advisory, we deliver independent, ISO-aligned GHG emissions inventories across Scope 1, 2 and 3 that give your organisation the data it needs to act with confidence.

Whether you are responding to AASB S2 mandatory climate disclosure requirements, working towards Climate Active certification, or simply need a reliable carbon audit to inform your sustainability strategy, our team provides rigorous, defensible results that stand up to regulatory and stakeholder scrutiny.

We work with corporates, government agencies, property developers, manufacturers and infrastructure owners across Australia to quantify, verify and reduce their carbon footprint. Our greenhouse gas emissions calculation methodology follows the GHG Protocol and ISO 14064, ensuring your inventory is credible, comparable and audit-ready.

What We Measure

Full Scope Coverage: Scope 1, 2 and 3 Emissions

A complete carbon footprint calculator for your business must account for all three emissions scopes. We assess and quantify every category relevant to your operations.

SCOPE 1

Direct Emissions

Fuel combustion, company vehicles, industrial processes and fugitive emissions from your own operations and facilities.

SCOPE 2

Purchased Energy

Indirect emissions from purchased electricity, heat, steam and cooling consumed across all your sites and facilities.

SCOPE 3

Value Chain Emissions

Upstream and downstream emissions including goods and services, freight, waste, business travel, employee commuting, leased assets, processing of products, franchises and investments.

Why It Matters

Why Australian Organisations Need a Professional Carbon Audit

The regulatory and commercial landscape has shifted permanently. A professional carbon audit is no longer optional for organisations that want to remain competitive, compliant and trusted.

Regulatory Drivers

  • AASB S2 mandatory climate-related financial disclosures now require large entities to report Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions
  • Climate Active carbon neutral certification requires a verified GHG inventory as the foundation of your application
  • Supply chain and procurement requirements increasingly demand supplier emissions data
  • ASX-listed entities face growing investor pressure to disclose and verify emissions

Commercial Drivers

  • Reduce energy costs and operational inefficiencies identified through the inventory process
  • Strengthen your tender responses and ESG reporting with independently verified data
  • Build stakeholder trust with credible, third-party assured emissions disclosure
  • Position your organisation ahead of regulation rather than scrambling to catch up
Our Methodology

Our Carbon Footprinting Process

We follow a structured, four-stage methodology aligned with the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard and ISO 14064-1, ensuring your inventory is robust, transparent and ready for external verification.

Scoping and Boundary

We define your organisational boundary, operational boundary and base year in line with GHG Protocol and your reporting requirements.

02

Data Collection

We work with your team to gather activity data across all relevant Scope 1, 2 and 3 categories using a structured data collection template.

03

Inventory Calculation

We apply current Australian and international emission factors to calculate your total carbon footprint using peer-reviewed, defensible methodology.

04

Reporting and Verification

We deliver a comprehensive GHG inventory report and, where required, coordinate ISO 14064-3 third-party verification or peer review.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about GHG emissions inventories and carbon footprinting? Here are the questions we hear most often from Australian businesses.

Many organisations begin with Scope 1 and 2 as a practical starting point, since these are typically easier to quantify and are already required under NGER reporting for eligible entities. However, for AASB S2 mandatory climate disclosures and Climate Active certification, Scope 3 measurement is also required. Even where it is not yet mandatory, Scope 3 often represents the largest share of an organisation’s total footprint, sometimes exceeding 70 to 80 per cent, so understanding it early is valuable for strategy and risk management. We can scope your inventory to match your current requirements and build on it over time.
The timeline depends on the size and complexity of your organisation and the availability of your activity data. For most small to medium-sized organisations, a Scope 1 and 2 inventory can be completed within two to three weeks from data receipt. A full Scope 3 assessment typically takes five to six weeks. We provide a clear project timeline and a structured data collection template at the start of every engagement to keep things on track.
We provide a tailored data collection template at the start of your engagement. Typically, we will need twelve months of energy bills (electricity, gas, fuel), vehicle fuel records, refrigerant top-up logs, business travel records, procurement spend or supplier data. We work alongside your finance, operations and facilities teams to gather this information efficiently and minimise the burden on your internal resources.
Verification requirements depend on your purpose. Climate Active certification requires a verified GHG inventory aligned with ISO 14064-3. AASB S2 mandatory climate disclosures are expected to require independent assurance for different entities. Many organisations also seek voluntary third-party verification to strengthen the credibility of their emissions reporting with investors, customers and regulators. Aqualis can conduct the inventory and coordinate verification, or provide peer review of an inventory prepared by another party.
Our GHG inventories are developed in accordance with the GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard, ISO 14064-1 for organisational greenhouse gas inventories, and the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (NGER) framework where applicable. We apply current Australian Government emission factors published by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, supplemented by internationally recognised factors where Australian-specific data is not available.
