Environmental Product Declaration: What It Is and Why It Matters

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a standardised, independently verified document that reports the environmental impacts of a product across its life cycle, developed in accordance with ISO 14025 and the relevant Product Category Rules (PCR). An EPD is built on a life cycle assessment conducted to ISO 14040 and ISO 14044, giving architects, engineers, developers and procurement teams comparable, evidence-based data to weigh one product against another. For manufacturers and suppliers, publishing an EPD is fast becoming a condition of entry for Green Star, NABERS and major infrastructure tenders, rather than a nice-to-have.

At Aqualis Carbon Advisory, our EPD service is built on our established life cycle assessment practice. Our practitioners are certified through the Australian Life Cycle Assessment Society (ALCAS) and the American Center for Life Cycle Assessment (ACLCA), and we apply the same rigorous, ISO-aligned modelling to every EPD we develop, regardless of product type or industry sector.

We develop the underlying LCA, select and apply the correct Product Category Rules, and compile your EPD in the standardised reporting format required by your chosen program operator. Independent verification is then carried out by an approved third-party verifier, kept entirely separate from the development work, which is exactly how the international EPD system is designed to preserve credibility and impartiality.

What Goes Into Your EPD

Environmental Product Declaration Development Aligned with ISO 14025

A credible EPD rests on four building blocks. We manage each one so that your declaration is technically sound, correctly scoped and ready for independent verification.

PCR SELECTION

The Right Product Category Rules

We identify and apply the Product Category Rules that govern your product category, including any complementary PCR, so your declared unit, system boundary and reporting format meet the programme operator’s requirements from the outset.

CRADLE TO GATE

Underlying Life Cycle Assessment

We conduct the ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 aligned LCA behind your EPD, typically to a cradle to gate boundary unless your PCR specifies otherwise, using primary data from your operations wherever possible.

MODULE D

Recycling and End of Life Benefits

Where relevant to your product and PCR, we model end of life pathways and recycling potential under Module D, helping your declaration capture the genuine circularity benefits of your product.

VERIFICATION READY

Prepared for Independent Verification

We compile your EPD in the standardised reporting format and prepare the supporting documentation your independent verifier will need, so the verification stage runs smoothly through your chosen programme operator.

Why It Matters

Why Australian Manufacturers Are Publishing Environmental Product Declarations

An EPD has moved from a niche technical document to a core piece of sales and procurement collateral. Manufacturers who publish early gain a genuine advantage in specification and tender processes.

Strategic and Commercial Drivers

  • Give your sales and technical teams a defensible, third-party verified document to support specification conversations
  • Meet the growing expectation from architects, engineers and developers for transparent, comparable product data
  • Differentiate your products in tenders and specifications that increasingly request EPDs as a condition of entry
  • Identify the highest-impact stages of your product life cycle to prioritise design and process improvements
  • Demonstrate circularity and end of life recovery benefits that off-the-shelf marketing claims cannot substantiate

Regulatory and Certification Drivers

  • Support Green Star, NABERS and other rating tool submissions that reward or require verified EPDs
  • Meet the growing requirement from tier-1 contractors and government procurement for ISO 14025 aligned disclosure
  • Provide the standardised, comparable format that whole-of-life carbon reporting increasingly demands
  • Complement AASB S2 climate disclosures by quantifying embodied and value chain impacts at the product level
  • Position your organisation ahead of tightening product stewardship and extended producer responsibility regulation
Our Methodology

Our Environmental Product Declaration Development Process

We follow the EPD development sequence set out in the relevant programme’s General Programme Instructions, so your declaration moves smoothly from scoping through to publication.

01

Select the Product Category Rules

We identify the correct PCR, and any applicable complementary PCR, for your product category and confirm it is current and appropriate for your intended programme operator.

02

Conduct the LCA Study

We conduct the underlying life cycle assessment to ISO 14040 and ISO 14044, following the data requirements, cut-off rules and allocation methods set out in your PCR.

03

Compile the EPD Reporting Format

We translate the LCA results into the standardised EPD reporting format, covering product description, system boundary, impact indicators and any additional environmental information your PCR requires.

04

Independent Verification

Your EPD is verified by an independent, accredited verifier engaged through your programme operator. This step is kept separate from our development work, which is how the international EPD system preserves impartiality. We prepare your documentation and liaise with the verifier on your behalf throughout.

05

Registration and Publication

Once verified, your EPD is registered and published through the programme operator’s portal, giving you a publicly available, independently verified document ready to support tenders and specifications.

Why Aqualis

Why Choose Aqualis Carbon Advisory for Your Environmental Product Declaration

Your EPD is only as credible as the life cycle assessment behind it. Whatever your product or sector, we bring the same certified, ISO-aligned rigour to your EPD that underpins every life cycle assessment we deliver. We do not sell LCA software licences or inventory databases, and we do not verify our own work, which means your declaration is built with genuine independence at every stage.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about Environmental Product Declarations? Here are the questions we hear most often from Australian manufacturers and product owners.

An Environmental Product Declaration, or EPD, is a standardised document that reports the environmental impacts of a product over its life cycle, developed in accordance with ISO 14025 and the relevant Product Category Rules for that product. It is based on a life cycle assessment conducted to ISO 14040 and ISO 14044, and it is independently verified before publication. Think of it as a nutrition label for environmental performance, allowing architects, engineers and procurement teams to compare products on a like-for-like basis.
We develop the underlying life cycle assessment and prepare your EPD in the standardised reporting format required by ISO 14025 and your Product Category Rules. Verification is carried out by an independent, accredited verifier engaged through your chosen programme operator, and we are not ourselves an approved EPD verifier for any programme. This separation is by design, since the international EPD system requires development and verification to be conducted independently of one another to protect the credibility of the final document. We prepare your documentation and support you through the verification process.
A Product Category Rule, or PCR, sets out the specific requirements for calculating and reporting an EPD for a given category of product, including the declared unit, system boundary, data quality rules and which environmental indicators must be reported. Selecting the correct PCR, and any applicable complementary PCR, is one of the first and most important steps in EPD development, since it governs every calculation that follows. We identify the appropriate PCR for your product before any modelling begins.
Timelines depend on your product’s complexity, how many variations need to be covered, and the availability of primary data from your operations and suppliers. As a general guide, PCR selection and LCA development typically take four to eight weeks, with independent verification adding a further two to four weeks depending on your programme operator’s process. We agree a realistic timeline with you at the outset based on your goal, scope and data readiness.
Yes. EPD development follows the same ISO 14025 framework and PCR-driven approach regardless of industry, and our practitioners are certified life cycle assessment professionals with the grounding to apply that framework to any product or material. Whether you manufacture construction products, packaging, industrial equipment or consumer goods, we identify the correct PCR for your category and build your EPD around it, drawing on internationally recognised life cycle inventory databases where primary data is not available.
